FAQS
General Wear & Care
Our ToniMay jewels are lovingly handmade and will love you for years to come if you take appropriate care of them. We recommend following the below tips to prolong the life of your jewels.
How do I best care for my ToniMay jewels?
We don't recommend wearing your ToniMay while swimming, showering, washing your hands or while doing household chores. Contact with sunscreens, creams, hairsprays, perfume, salt/chlorinated water, soaps and chemicals can cause damage to the stones and metals we use in our pieces.
Please remove your ToniMay jewels before sleeping, working out at the gym or carrying heavy items. We recommend that your ToniMay pieces are the last thing to put on when getting ready for the day and the first thing to take off at the end of your day. Silver is a soft metal and can bend, warp and break under force. Necklaces can kink, stretch and snap during sleep or if tugged on or caught on clothing while getting dressed. Rings, cuffs and earrings can bend, snap and warp under pressure.
How should I store my ToniMay jewels?
Please store them in a safe and secure place (not in your wallet!) to avoid dust, moisture and direct light that can cause tarnishing and damage. The box that your jewels were delivered in is a perfect home for them.
We recommend gently wiping down your pieces between wear and before storage to remove any chemicals or body oils that may cause tarnishing.
How can I clean my ToniMay jewels?
We recommend a good quality silver or gold polishing cloth to keep your jewellery looking as new. Silver and Brass will naturally tarnish and oxidise as the metals react to heat, body oils and other chemicals during wear, but a regular polish with a polishing cloth will help restore the shine. Tarnishing is not considered a fault of the product, just a sign it needs a good clean.
Please avoid over polishing any gold plated pieces as this can cause damage to the gold plating and cause it to lighten.
Can I wear my jewels in water?
We don't recommend wearing your ToniMay while swimming, showering, washing your hands or while doing household chores.
Contact with sunscreens, creams, hairsprays, perfume, salt/chlorinated water, soaps and chemicals can cause damage to the stones and metals we use in our pieces.
Exposure to water, chemicals and polishing will also cause gold plating to wear more quickly. Please note that gold plating is not permanent.
How can I prevent my jewels tarnishing?
Over time, silver and gold plated pieces may experience tarnishing or plating wear due to chemicals that the piece has been in contact with or moisture in the air, which then reacts with the metal. This is a natural process and is not considered a fault of the product. Hairspray, perfumes, deodorant and body products can all contribute to tarnishing and plating wear over time so we recommend avoiding contact where possible.
Storing your jewellery in an air tight container and ensuring they are wiped down between wears and storage will help keep tarnishing at bay and extend the length of your plating.
We do recommend investing in a silver or gold polishing cloth to help restore and maintain your jewels.
My Jewels look different to the photos?
Our ToniMay jewels are handmade with natural materials, therefore colours, level of oxidisation, stone inclusions, sizes of stones, embellishments and some core materials may vary. Our pieces may also show some small tool markings from our jewellers as each piece is hand made.
We do not consider these variations to be faults or imperfections but adding to the unique nature of each piece we create.
In the unlikely event that you are unsatisfied with your purchase please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order at orders@tonimay.com.au
Special Care Instructions
Some of our jewels need a little more TLC than others due the handmade and unique nature of our pieces.
Semi & Precious Stones
We use semi-precious and precious jewels in our pieces and some require more care than others.
Please keep stone set jewellery away from chemicals and products which may impact the integrity of the stones.
Opals, Apatite, Emeralds and Moonstones in particular are high care stones and should be treated with more care - opals in particular are porous stones and can experience changes to their colouring if exposed to water, soaps/chemicals or stored in high humidity environments (eg bathrooms).
Huggies
Huggies may loosen over time and may require gentle adjusting to ensure that they clasp securely. If you find that your huggies have loosened or do not clasp together securely it is likely that the post has been moved out of alignment with the clasp. This can be easily repaired by lifting the very end of the post so that it realigns with clasp.
Please do not force the hoop open from the front of the ear or push down on the post with force as this will damage the post and hinge.
Cuffs
Please avoid stretching open cuffs to take them on and off or tightening cuffs on the wrist. Cuffs should be slid on and off the wrist from the thinnest part of the side of the wrist. Stretching cuffs open and closed can cause a weakness in the band and cause cuffs to crack. This can also weaken the stone settings over time.
Please also take care not to catch cuffs during wear on surfaces or clothing as this can cause damage which is irreparable and not covered under warranty.
Gold Plating
Gold plated pieces are best suited to occasional wear only, as the plating will wear to expose the metal underneath if worn on a daily basis.
Gold plating is not permanent and will wear on all pieces over time, however exposure to water, chemicals and over polishing will cause gold plating to wear more quickly.
We do not recommend swimming or showering in gold plated jewellery and to avoid contact with perfumes, hair spray and body products where possible. Between wears we recommend lightly wiping down your gold plated jewels.
We do offer a re-plating service as part of our ongoing customer care. Please get in touch with orders@tonimay.com.au for a quote if you are are interested in having any of your gold plated pieces re-stored.
